The term 'necklift' can be applied to a variety of procedures. These procedures may tighten excess skin, remove excess fat, and/or tighten loose muscles in the neck ('platysma' bands that hang below the chin).
For some, a necklift may include a lower facelift. For others, different procedures may be indicated.
- Anterior cervicoplasty uses a small incision under the chin to tighten neck muscles and remove excess fat. This may be combined with a facelift procedure, which tightens loose skin.
- Submental Z-plasty may be used in males who want to avoid facelift scars, which are more visible with short haircuts or baldness. This procedure directly excises excess skin from the neck under the chin area, and also tightens muscles and removes excess fat as necessary. The scars from this procedure are not 'hidden,' but in properly selected patients they represent a good tradeoff for a markedly improved neck contour.
- Submental liposuction will provide some patients with a tightening of the neck skin.
- Botox can also be used to diminish the appearance of 'platysma bands' under the chin, though the effect is modest in comparison to surgical techniques.
